Strelitzia nicolai

Common name: Giant white bird of paradise.

Height at maturity: 4 - 6 metres locally

We grow this plant in 330mm, 425mm and 500mm pots.

Nicolai will throw out many suckers over the years. Leaves are large, shiny and grey-green in colour, growing up to 2m in length. Nicolai really comes to life in a Sub-Tropical garden or a Balinese-Thai setting, creating a lush tropical effect. It is recommended for use in a larger garden bed. The root system can be aggressive so do not put it too close to fence lines and garden paths. It is also grown in pots for household and office decoration, as the large leaves are spectacular indoors. They make a nice tropical screen. Prefers rich, moist soils with good drainage in full sun to part shade. The plant tolerates light frost. The flowers are about 500mm long ; please note that plants require many years of growth before they begin blooming.
